  • Yeah, MLK Jr was pretty clear about his position when he said that communism and Christianity are fundamentally incompatible. He was a socialist, which is a different thing. But let’s pretend that he said socialist instead of communist… Wouldn’t that make you kinda curious to know the details of what socialism is then? Because everybody says that King was a great man and helped achieve racial equality, so his ideology must not be as evil as everybody says, right?

So if you’re young and maybe not super aware of politics and civics and everything, and you see this tweet in response to a general “Happy MLK Jr Day” tweet from Elmo, you’re gonna have questions and your Google results are gonna lead you to answers that reveal what a fucking clown show the John Birch society is.

It’s petty, it’s factually inaccurate, and if chases young people to your opposition’s ideology. Plus picking on a literal Muppet is the kind of thing a lazy writer would write to show how villainous a character is. What a disaster of a tweet, and I’m thrilled to see it.

  • And also show them a picture of JD Vance and explain that he’s Peter Thiel’s lapdog. And explain who Peter Thiel is. And explain why he’s bad and therefore why Vance is bad.

On second thought, reaching the willfully ignorant is gonna be a fucking task and a half, especially with fox news blasting in public spaces like waiting rooms while critical thinking is gutted in public schools.

It’s hard to feel bad for America right now. We had it coming. We told ourselves for 80 years that it can’t happen here, so our guard wasn’t up to contend with the reality that it could happen here, guaranteeing our eventual current state of fucking happening here.

I don’t know how this ends in anything other than violent collapse, and I’m not sure how to get my family out in time or where to go. I won’t be considered a valid refugee until after these Nazis have us too trapped to get out at all. People are too exhausted and stupid to organize into effective resistance. I doubt it would take that many bodies to surround the white house with rifles and achieve regime change, but nobody’s coming to save us, and that includes our bickering, divided left and also the feckless liberals trying to soften everything to just some light fascism that’s still 100 calories of fascism, but that’s better than 140 calories of fascism so we’re supposed to just be over the fucking moon with all their hard work.

I’m so tired of warranted anxiety. Say what you want about Biden, (believe me, I have my complaints,) but he at least kept the car on the road. He got us off the rumble strips. Now we’ve already careened off the cliff, but nobody will acknowledge it until we hit the bottom in a fiery explosion. It would take a fucking miracle to sprout wings and save us at this point.

  • I’m not on board with the way that it’s currently applied, to be clear. I was just saying that that could be a reasonable thought for an argument for it, and that I thought that it could be valid if rarely and very publicly used for the most extreme couple of cases in a century.

I’m not here to defend the death penalty. But I’m also not gonna try too hard to protect a Hitler from that in order to get him a life sentence which could just be pardoned/commuted by his biggest fans. You’re right that we should be very careful about giving a government the right to murder a person, and that several death sentences have been carried out against people found to have been innocent, but that’s also why I bring up only using it for plainly, obviously guilty monsters like Mussolini or Hitler, and making sure that it’s inhumanely awful for them, and making it as widely visible as possible so that nobody can be unaware of what a miserable consequence you’ll suffer for doing that terrible shit.

But I also understand the hypocrisy of “it’s wrong to kill people, so we’ve decided to kill you, and that’s totally different because we decided that we have the power to legitimately decide that.” I don’t know the right answer, but it’s clear to me that there are too many monsters among us, so I’m spitballing whether there’s something that could’ve been done differently to have prevented this.

  • Not OP but thought I’d chime in. I became convinced in the past few years to never be on board with the death penalty, but the past year has me on the fence about very rarely applying it. I think that a public execution could serve as a deterrent, reserved only for those who are very plainly guilty of the very worst atrocities. I mean worse than mass shooters. I’m talking decades of willful societal damage. Mussolini level of horrible. If we could’ve gotten to Hitler before he could kill himself, imagine the public, tortured, slow execution, and really ask yourself how many people would dare to wave a Nazi flag or sieg heil after that.

Maybe a few of these in the entire world over a century would be enough to prevent every genocide. I’m open to trying. Life in prison allows people to forget, but recorded gruesome executions are seared into memories.

  • What?! But we were told that he couldn’t be bought because he already has sooo much money!

Somebody told me that and I countered with “no, the fact that he has billions of dollars and only ever talks about things in terms of money and has no real friends means that the only thing he values is money. Above friendship, above family, above morality, above any flavor of faith. All he has in the world is money, and he thinks himself successful, so he’d sell everything in the world for just a little more.”

  • I’m reminded of how justice is served on the ice in a hockey game. If a player executes an illegal, dangerous hit on another player, especially if the victim is the goalie or a star player, and the refs don’t call shit, then that guy is about to get his ass beat.

There will be consequences, even if the DoJ refuses to act. The heat is rising on this cold civil war. When trump crowns himself head of the fed and slashes interest rates, and when the dollar crashes soon thereafter, shit’s gonna get crazy.

I’m also predicting that somebody high up in this administration refers to America as an “empire” and then a “realm” and possibly just straight up a “reich” within this year.

  • Considering the lack of value we’re getting in return for these taxes, nah I’m pretty sure everybody should be upset about taxes. Other, better countries may pay more in taxes, but after accounting for the healthcare and worker rights that the taxes get them, they end up with more time and more money than most Americans.

I met a local politician who, in my red area, just seemed like he was dancing around labeling himself a Democrat. The office was for basically money management in the area, and he was talking about optimizing the use of tax funds. I made it clear that I don’t really mind paying this tax rate, and I would even pay more, but only if it starts getting used on shit that matters like building another school because ours are getting overcrowded, and the area is growing whether we prepare or not. I said that even if I only cared about my own finances, that’s an investment that supports growth which would raise my property value, and it would attract new businesses to serve that growing population. Just plan for it so that it doesn’t grow out of control and become a shit hole with stupid intersection infrastructure and urban sprawl.
