3·12 days agoMost countries have some kind of “disaster preparedness” suggestions, be they for earthquakes, floods, tornados, WMDs, etc. A lot of these suggestions overlap: have a stock of food, know where important documents are, think about where you’d shelter, etc.
There will probably not be an extinction-level event. But at some point in your life you may experience an emergency where you need a stock of food, to know where your documents are, to have a place to shelter, etc. So maybe it’d help you out to make plans for what you’d do in case of a general emergency/disaster.
Here are a couple useful documents that were made in the US:
RIght, but the point is, that’s beyond the scope of what Piefed is interested in. It’s not going to take that step down that road. I like it.

This reminds me of when I was a kid growing up (in developing nations), and people would show up from the US demanding all the same services that they had back home.
Was gonna say this. Some jobs will help pay for classes (max 1 at a time) and some will even let you take the classes “on company time.” With Distance Education this is easier than ever. I took classes while working for a couple years, then was gonna take a semester off work and finish a Master’s Degree. (but ended up doing a PhD instead.)

These models are, by their very nature, tools that just regurgitate past precedent.
It’s worse than that. Before GenAI, AI systems would have a Knowledge Base that output some kind of formal structure, and a Reply Generator that took the formal structure and turned it into human language. GenAI is basically a very good Reply Generator without a Knowledge Base.
And it turns out that knowledge is important…

By US standards it’s pretty good.
Biggest mistake in my life was leaving Boston. People weren’t unfriendly, they just had busy lives and didn’t have time for BS, but if you were waiting at a T stop you could easily strike up a conversation. I lived in Brookline and I can easily think of 5 different places with great food (at reasonable prices) in that area alone. Sure, it was kinda cold in winter; okay it’s not as easy to navigate as Manhattan, but it’s got character. There are ways to live cheap there but yeah the biggest killer is rent, either you’ll be commuting a lot or you’ll be living cramped. Still, it’s one of my 3 favorite cities in the world.
