This studio doesn’t have a reputation of milking an IP for a cash grab. And if you were going to do that, The Expanse isn’t big enough for that to be a very lucrative idea.
That is comforting to hear about the studio, the Expanse Dragon’s tooth earned 1.4 million with 12k backers on kick starter, and that was in my opinion with little marketing, seems like enough for a cash grab to me!
I looked up Owlcat games, agree their previous projects seem to be liked, but this project looks VASTLY different from what they have made previously, I’ll keep my hopes up though.
Also, see their recent release “Rue Valley”… (Apparently they were only the publisher, which is better… but they still put their name on it)
Owlcat is a big RPG developer. Closer to Larian in terms of headcount. $1.4m is a drop in the bucket.
The concerns here would be about the different type of project and Owlcat’s history of releasing unpolished games at 1.0, not in it being a soulless cash grab.
glad to hear they are so beloved, I think an unpolished full release is a cash grab, as first impressions are important, but we can disagree on that point.
Was mentioned in another comment but Rue Valley is published by Owlcat, not produced by them. Just want to increase visibility on that since it’s a really common mistake.

Some folks have likened them to Obsidian, isometric rpg to third person scifi action RPG.
If the mechanics are ok, they have done a wonderful job of writing in the past so I’m optimistic.
Fingers crossed!

thats good to know, it definitely looks like the worst project they are associated with, I’ll note that its published by.
