I fucking hate my xfinity router. their excuse of a “settings” panel can ONLY be accessed from their app 🤮, and just marvel at the plethora of options you can configure:
SSID
Password
xfinitywifi Hotspot ON/OFF
“Safe” Browsing ON/OFF
this is madness compared to my previous att router, which while still a shitty ISP router, at least had enough settings to create a proper self-hosting environment. I feel this is being done to kill self-hosting.
Y is so last decade, everyone I know is using X12
I resort to ancient audio hardware with pure ALSA from how bad the modern Linux audio stack has gotten
pipewire is forgivable as it’s slowly healing the Linux audio madness

Bazzite GNOME on my “it needs to work daily no matter what” school/work/light gaming laptop, ~250ish flatpak apps (mostly very awesome tiny GTK4-based tools)
Devuan on my desktop PC, Trinity Desktop Environment, almost entirely apt apps, I do heavy multimedia work and gaming on it, I squeeze as much speed as I can
Debian on my Linux phone (FuriLabs FLX1s running FuriOS, a fork of Droidian, which is a fork of Mobian, which is a fork of Debian), Phosh UI, almost entirely ~140ish flatpaks
I try to keep my operating systems and software as controlled and predictable as possible, but I approach that differently depending on the usecase. Yes, I’ve tried NixOS, fell in love with it, and quickly realized it’s overengineered and makes my head hurt. I also used CachyOS with TDE on my desktop for a while, was really speedy but TDE packaging for Arch really sucks compared to their Debian packaging
that first number singlehandedly helped me fix my mom’s phone. for context, 5g reception is quite mediocre where i live (especially if you’re on att, which my mom thankfully isn’t on). i went to network settings: no band toggle. i opened android’s advanced network settings menu: tried to gaslight me that this phone doesn’t have 4g (i know damn well it does). finally, that first number in your comment that opens HiddenMenu, showed an entry called “NR debug” or something like that. and there it was: “Disable NR”. her phone is so much faster now, but idk how long that will persist since some phones change this shit behind your back after like a week.
to all the carriers and phone manufacturers: JUST GIVES US THE BUTTONS AND KNOBS. WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING AND FORCING US ON YOUR INFERIOR NETWORK IS NOT GOING TO CONVINCE US IT’S BETTER. 5G/NR IS JUST FUNDAMENTALLY A BAD IDEA TO USE FOR CELLULAR TELEPHONY. i miss the days of lte for internet, gsm/cdma for calls, like it was in 2019 and earlier. modern phones and vintage phones worked alike, and volte was merely an optional enhancement.

i’d recommend aurora, it is from the same team that made bazzite, and is literally just bazzite but without the gaming apps preinstalled, focused more on average pc users

think steamos with all of it’s goodies (and more bazzite-exclusive features), but on a more standardised linux base so you can run it on any pc and handheld, not just the steam deck. bazzite is also just as unbreakable as steamos, since it is an immutable (read-only system files) os, and updates the same way as a phone does (downloads an update in the background, and uses it on next boot with a rollback option in the super rare event that it breaks something).
agreed, but so far calls and text on my flx1s have been for some reason more stable than my past android phones? also I’m lucky to be using a bank who’s app works on custom roms (including the furiphone’s andromeda layer)
feels great having the same apps on my phone as on my Linux desktop
