No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What is with these videos where it's just someone reaction to shit someone else is doing?
0·3 months agoThere is some content I am curious about but can only stomach when I watch it on a reaction channel so I don’t die of second hand embarrassment. For other people I think it has a lot to do with feeling lonely. Reaction channels make you feel like you have someone to share the jokes with. I think way too many people are lonely nowadays.
I kind of like “Closed for the week” “Go away and don’t bother me, I’m closed this week due to bleeding.” :D
A common one in German is Erdbeerwoche (strawberry week).

News@lemmy.world•Font of ‘wasteful’ diversity: Trump’s state department orders return to Times New Roman
0·4 months agoThe debate had actually been going on for a while between Fraktur and Antiqua. In the past Fraktur was used to write German, while Antiqua was used for Latin. The debate is known as the “Antiqua-Fraktur-Streit” and was going on in Germany since the 18th century. In the late 19th century it became very heated when several movements tried to make their preferred font the standard in the wake of standardizations for spelling. During the Weimar republic both were taught in schools, Antiqua for Latin and Fraktur for German.
Now you’d think someone like Hitler would love a classical German font, but Hitler found the usage of Fraktur “backward-looking” and the artsy, ornate style of Fraktur not fitting for the new age of technology and strong Aryans. They even prohibited the usage of Fraktur in some publications.
It’s actually pretty hilarious that Fraktur is associated with Nazis now when Hitler was pretty outspoken about hating it and tried very hard to abolish it.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What do you do when you have a cold and can't take medicine?
0·4 months agoHot tea with honey (there are plenty of herbs that will help like chamomile). Slowly sucking on a spoonful of honey also helps with a sore throat. I also find it helps to move from the bed to the couch because I’ll get sick of the bed and the bedroom and being in the livingroom changes things up. Also hot showers and changing the pyjama. Just anything that makes me feel like I’m not marinating in my bed 24/7.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Where do you typically leave/read reviews
0·5 months agoI don’t anymore. I don’t know a single page that is reliable. On google even three star reviews get removed, so good reviews are meaningless.

News@lemmy.world•U.S. citizen shot from behind as he warned ICE agents about children gathering at bus stop, lawyers say
0·5 months agoI’m German and when I was in elementary school in the 90s we learned about the Nazi regime. An old woman visited our class to talk about what is was like for her as a child under Hitler. I remember that she said some people just disappeared and noone really knew why. There were rumours about prisons or labor camps but noone knew for sure what happened to the people who disappeared. She only learned about the concentration camps after the war was over.
I bet in a decade or so we will learn about all the horrors that are really going on right now.

News@lemmy.world•‘It’s risky business emotionally’: the social shift towards open relationships
0·5 months agoRelationsships with several people have been around in a lot of cultures all over the world. Harems have existed through all time periods. The main problem in the past was ensuring paternity so it was usually one man with several women. The bible has several examples of men taking multiple women, in many islamic societies taking multiple wives is ok, in Nepal one woman could have several men.
Of course relationships have mostly been formed by economic necessities, not considerations of sexual preference. A woman might have several husbands in a place where living conditions are rough and it takes a lot of manpower for one household. A man may have many wives where men often die from wars and the women need to be taken care of. If these rules are kept for hundreds or even thousands of years, can you still call them a phase?
Besides you must not forget that the western view on history has been heavily shaped by christian values. Obvious proof that people were homo-/bisexual in the past was reinterpreted, the same goes for any form of open/poly relationship. “They were roommates” has become a meme for a reason.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why isn't the rest of the world doing anything about the USA?
0·5 months agoAssuming things turns back, there will be a lot to rebuild in matter of trust and commerce.
I’m not so sure about that. The US has proven that they’ll make a 180° turn on anything within just the blink of an eye. Even if the US turns back, there’ll be no guarantee it won’t elect the next batshit crazy person as president four years later.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are there good Movies, TV Shows, Anime, with wholesome family (particularly parent-child) relations?
0·5 months agoIt’s a bit older, but I think Adventures of the Gummi Bears has a wholesome family dynamic, even if the family doesn’t seem to be related. If I remeber correctly, the King (Calla’s father) is also shown to be a very loving father.

0·6 months agoYou know they don’t want to do that. If they did, people would ask questions like “How come my 40$ homemade Spaghetti with fresh spinach sauce lists soylecithin, yeast extract and xanthan gum as ingredients?”

News@lemmy.world•California restaurants will have to disclose food allergens on their menus under new law
0·6 months agoI’m shocked that it isn’t a law already. It’s been obligatory in the EU for 10 years. Although a lot of restaurants don’t follow it…
There’s this café in Nagoya, Japan, that serves sweet spaghetti: the spaghetti are flavoured with strawberry or chocolate and then you have fruits and sauces on top. It’s delicious.
Edit because I just went through old photos and found one of the sweet spaghetti:

I’ve been banned from several communities here for downvoting in one. At least that’s what the messages said. Got several bans for communities I didn’t even know existed 😂.

News@lemmy.world•Trump says he’s designating Antifa as a terrorist organization
0·6 months agoSee that’s the neat part: since it’s not an organization, you can just call anyone and everyone Antifa and lock them up. How would they prove their innocence?

English starts in 3rd grade here and a second language like French or Spanish usually in 5th grade. Starting to learn foreign languages in high school is wild.
