The guilt tripping seems off, there’s not a squeak about this on uk’s open university ‘Group for Palestine’ facebook group (couldn’t quite check their Instagram) despite a reputable chair member of that group organizing it, the spam in general on lemmy of all places (especially through a very emotionally vulnerable instance when it comes to palestine)…

Worked fine for me, especially those repackers. There were occasionally some problems like repacks relying on some libraries that are impossible to set up but usually some other repack for the same game works fine. I use bottles flatpak for extra bit of security (since it isolates the filesystem and some apps), works much better than lutris IMO but you can’t really go wrong with anything

Have you tried just giving the friend MP code and them joining through it? Worked for me without any zerotier, so it could be repack dependent. I used the GOG version.

There’s genuinely no reason to cut ties with US for any country, doing so would just shoot it in the foot since you lose one of the largest economies for trade.

To be fair, you don’t need to update your system to install a package, all you need to do is run the update command just to sync up the database, then cancel out when prompted.

You’re likely getting radicalized leftward, and this emotion and panic is a temporary part of it. It has happened to me and to others in the past, but this intense feeling eventually passes.
What helped me personally in the later stages was getting a coherent worldview, reading and studying some political theory so you can actually spot what doesn’t fit in the news and in the comments, know what’s actually in your interest to support rather than falling for some general moralizations, etc.

Long Answer: Communism is an economic progression from capitalism where things aren’t produced for profit/money, but for it’s use value to fulfill needs, where private property and capitalists as a class are abolished.
(Partial) State ownership is something that would happen in a period of transition after workers have took over the state and toppled the capitalists (in US case it’d be all the political parties, government and organs serving it), with all of their private property being repurposed to building up the production - it’s what’s called state capitalism or transitory period, not communism or socialism, as things are still being distributed for money, which means markets, etc.
However, capitalist liberal democratic countries can just own stuff. Mussolini’s Italy for instance had owned a large share of factories, countries such as US/UK had nationalized industry during ww2, there’s tons of EU countries right now that have partial ownership in private companies or have complete national ownership of certain companies (mostly transport or broadcasting).
In other words, it’s heavily contextual, not unique to the building of communism, and Trump’s acquisitions if you look a closer look at them are less of “we control you now” and more like US becoming a shareholder like a private individual (they don’t even have the seat at the board apparently) so none of the explanation was relevant and it’s just a weird way of managing some crisis (probably).

I find it funny how this question is being asked on Lemmy of all places, where the definition of fascism has been completely lost (essentially now being some vague notion of right-wing evil)
The domain name is a red flag in itself, but looking through steam underground I did find someone with plenty of comments under their belt saying how they got files for some game they shared from that site and 0 mentions of it being malware, so it’s probably okay.
That being said, I’d personally recommend just using bottles for piracy, don’t even bother with native linux ports given how they’re usually worse than windows versions running through DXVK/Vulkan (except maybe Factorio given it’s Linux unique optimizations) using Bottles or something for added security - it’s safer to download them too given how many trustworthy repackers package them.
Killing some milquetoast conservative grifter isn’t “waking up”, it won’t be some catalyst for “inspiring people to take up arms against oppression” either as that stuff only happens in fairy tales (see: Luigi). Download from trusted sources (if it’s video games I recommend using cs rin ru forums since they have good resources on which sites to avoid for instance and repackers post there under game threads), that’s probably the biggest piece of advice.
If you want to be extra safe and don’t mind learning something more advanced than just double clicking .exe, look into sandboxing and apps like sandboxie-plus (can’t verify if it’s any good though from experience), as these will essentially isolate programs away from your filesystem and allow you to easily shut off internet connections it can make.
