I think the authors in the linked document mentioned chat communications between users which is definitely application layer.

It has been scientifically proven that light mode text is easier to read. Has to do with light diffusion and contrast. Light characters blend into each other while black characters are sharp. Your pupils adjust to the overall brightness.
