There should be consequences for trying to pass all these horrible and doomed bills. Unfortunately the people keep voting for the people writing them.

I just use my phone to look stuff up if I’m on my steam deck.

We are being governed by the worst among us

You’re not going to find a rational, well reasoned, explanation. It’s just emotions. Fear, pride, shame. Most people are too cowardly to do any difficult introspection, and an older person who’s probably never practiced it is a unlikely to start now.

I don’t think I’ve ever gone much out of my way for achievements for their own sake. Games where they also unlock stuff (eg: binding of isaac), sure, but that’s for the unlock.
I may have done some challenge stuff that I learned about for the achievement, but only because it seemed fun. I wouldn’t go very far into anti-fun just for an digital badge on my profile.

In America, we resolve our political differences at the ballot box,
Do we though?

I don’t think the conservatives really understand the meanings of words
Many of them know they are using words dishonestly. They don’t care. They will say whatever in the pursuit of power.
Some are just legitimately stupid and have no internal consistency beyond emotions.

The insurance companies want to make money.
There are no (enforced) laws prohibiting this behavior.
Very few insurance company decision makers are murdered in the street.
Change one or more of these, and you’ll get better results.

Surely we’ve all seen the relevant XKCD https://xkcd.com/1217/

Sure, being too picky can lead to loneliness. But that’s kind of off topic from “you’ll have more rolls of the dice in a place with more people”, which was my earlier argument.
I wouldn’t want to settle for someone with no shared interests and a not-my-type body just because they’re here. Everyone involved deserves better.

“you’ll settle for whoever’s around” is a compelling argument - if whoever is around happens to be good enough
Bit of a tautology there. My point is if there’s only 1 person of your age/gender(s) then it’s longer odds they’re going to be a good match. Sure, they might be “good enough” but wouldn’t you rather have “great”?

I’m don’t think “you’ll settle for whoever’s around” is a compelling argument.
Furthermore, there are few places where it’s actually like a rom-com and the waitress sets you up. There can’t be a lot of people in that situation because then there wouldn’t be so few people that they can be matched up. Most people live in cities or suburban wastelands.

Well, they can be unhappy about it but that doesn’t change how you’ll have more chances of meeting a partner where there’s more people doing more stuff.

Dating apps. They suck, but there’s a lot you can do (without paying money) to improve your odds.
Go to meetups. They exist for hobbies (board games, running, bird watching) and regions (North Brooklyn hangout). Don’t go cruising but go for the thing and meet people.
Join a rec sport league. There’s a bunch of soccer ones here.
If you live somewhere shitty, you’re going to have a worse time. I live in a big city so there’s a lot of people doing stuff. If I lived out in the sticks, there might be a dozen people of my desired age and gender(s) total.

We need more than resignation. We need real punishments.

There are many, many, people that could be granted good bus service without tearing down and rebuilding the world. The problem is political. Every day and every dollar we put into other lesser solutions comes with a large opportunity cost.
Imagine if we’d focused on buses for the past 22 years instead of waymo. How many people could be served by the $16 billion in funding waymo got?

I’d rather live somewhere with buses and trains. You can get places when old and/or drunk, you build a better world for everyone, and you don’t funnel money into shitty privately owned tech companies.

Everyone who supported the Jan 6 insurrection should be ineligible to hold office per the existing amendments, for starters.

I like the idea. I don’t want to use facebook or similar, but that’s where stuff like “BuyNothing” is most active.
Unfortunately, I don’t know much about self hosting (beyond what I’ve picked up working in software development) so I don’t see myself running one of these myself. I’d probably use it if it came to my neck of the woods (NYC)
People assume it’s all terminal all the time. I haven’t needed to open the terminal for months. It starts up. With the GUI I open the browser. Maybe steam, too. Do stuff. Shut down.
