Linux@lemmy.ml•Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at the kernel level, and the speed gains are massive
4·4 days agoGood point.
Ironically … i’ve played exactly the same game in Proton on Steamdeck (I’m assuming that’s using Proton; i did not check TBH) just few weeks ago and it all worked just fine. Maybe they fixed it in the meantime or it depends…
(But yeah your point stands.)

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it reasonable to be concerned about security issues when switching to Linux?
13·25 days agoLot of people will tell you something like “don’t run stuff aS rOoT” but from personal security POV root is almost irrelevant. Potential attacker can do plenty of damage without root.
root only allows crossing boundaries of the current user, but for personal use, everything you care about is probably 100% accessible under your normal user account. You don’t need root to steal your photos and passwords, you don’t need root to shimmy a daemon in your ~/.profile to start every time you log in, you don’t need root to mine shitcoins, use your machine as part of botnet or whatnot.
Good advice is to vet everything you install, or choose a third party to vet it for you. In ideal world,
- choose a stable, well-maintained and up-toodate distro with a good reputation,
- limit installing software from official sources only. …and you’re probably going to be fine.
In less than ideal world, maybe add flatpak to the mix but assume that the repository is a wild west. Running AppImage apps or installing third-party .deb/.rpm/etc. packages, again, if you trust the source, you trust the source.
(But for f’s sake, don’t just run
curl | bashscripts (with sudo or not) from random github repos and stuff.)

Linux@lemmy.ml•How do you explain to your co-workers that you use Libre Office Writer and other Linux apps?English
5·29 days agothen have them slowly realize over time that you’re not just going to bullshit around but actually find and incorporate viable alternatives into your workflow, even if some steps will be inconvenient, and have them feel that something like that is now expected of them and slowly start avoiding you or subconsciously marking you as extremist and feeling the need to defend MS in front of you on behalf of “but most people…”.
yeah, that’s the sweet spot.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Why isn't there a Windows community? Is Linux winning?
122·29 days agobecause they want to see ads in their start menu, send their pictures to some MS servers and have their notepad.exe crawl and crash because of AI.
you know, all the fun stuf…

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What should be emoji reaction for "me too" in the general sense?
1·2 months agoiirc slack did it and I’m sure github issues and gitlab too. but usually you don’t have control of the order, IIRC with slack it was in the urder you added them but once more people added same reactions then it would sort them in order most to fewest.
i was kinda thinking about one of those parts of unicode where characters can be combined … that’s common for some scripts but i vaguely recall that i saw a mention somewhere that something like that exists also for emojis (in the unicode) …

1·2 months agoare these double-emojis a thing? or you mean those apps that let you add multiple reactions (sadly signal does not seem to allow that, neither telegram and those are the only 2 i really use i guess)

1·2 months agoi mean if it was something like flight reservation etc. then screenshot would be definitely in place.
this is something we do literally 2 times a week (and plan to do so until we’re able to go to the gym :D) though, and it’s pretty low stakes.
i’m not looking for something that just works in that kind of context. (and in general, actually it’s not like i’m on lemmy looking to resolve things with my pal :D)

on second thought, i’m 45, old enough to be vaguely aware of ye olde internet culture (i was in uni back then so i saw them baby neckbeards but sadly did not have the good taste & judgment to hang out with them and decided to ruin my brain with beer and weed instead) … at this age we should start getting used to various vision issues :D 🧓

my /usr/bin/redshift cronjob kicks in at 7 pm and sometimes i don’t realize and i get to be confused by colors. (probably nothing to do with the orange thing though, although i do have experience that my brain can imagine colors)
just sayin’

2·2 months agodarn i did not realize that.
i suppose i should vertical-record: the reservation app open in my librewolf, pan (swoosh!) to my hand on the mouse, pan (swoosh!) back to the monitor detailing the newly added reservation, pan (swoosh!) to my face winking and smiling with a thumbs up.
is that about right? i’m learning quick, am i not?
thanks for the support, so tiktok it is next time!

3·2 months agoit depends on the chat client / config but i like that the lower status of the reaction, ie. it does not even generate notification and a badge.
my pal can just totally forget about it and just check on it when he needs.
(it’s often times at random times in the middle of the workday when we exchange these messages so i want to be respectful to his focus.)

5·2 months agoI love the crab story.
I would totally click the crab because if i’m in a good mood all it can mean is just someone being playful so it feels like a tiny adventure.
On the other hand, If you ever win huge amounts of money and decide to leave your job flipping everyone off you could also say “and those 🦀 's were a test and you FAILED! sheeple!”?
Did not want to respond but this is hilarious.
To be fair, really old CLI’s, like from the time when X.org was the new stuff, this style used to be more common. That was before “GNU style” (using single dash for single-letter bundle-able options and double dash for long options) became prevalent.
But yeah, if you see
-foothen you know the program is old enough that regular colonoscopy is recommended, and the original author is probably retired or “passed away at the ripe age of …”.
