No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Am I financially enabling child labor in 3rd world countries by buying second hand fast fashion?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Am I financially enabling child labor in 3rd world countries by buying second hand fast fashion?
61·1 month agoWell-functioning second hand markets encourage buying quality products new, cause they have resell value. If the quality is truly shit, nobody would be paying money for it, especially second hand.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Am I financially enabling child labor in 3rd world countries by buying second hand fast fashion?
6·1 month agoA few thoughts:
- Depends how much money you are spending to buy those clothes. If it’s almost the same as the price as new, it makes it easier for the people who buy the clothes new to keep buying more and more stuff.
- If you aren’t spending a lot of money, this is like the opposite of fast fashion. You are making the life cycle of those clothes longer by buying them.
PS. I don’t think we should individualize things like this. A significant chunk of the clothes we buy – and other things as well – are made under miserable conditions and/or by children, and it’s very difficult to avoid all of that. It’s a systemic issue that needs to be solved on a systemic level.

They are called digital audio players / DAPs nowadays. Theres a wide variety of them. Also you can also buy a used ipod or a sony walkman. I use an iPod nano, though that’s would be a bit of a hassle without macos.
The modded ipod classics are kinda cool, larger storage and open source software. And no bluetooth if you are concerned about that.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do old people still remember their childhood? Do people just start losing their memories and their sense of self as they get older?
0·2 months agoI don’t and I’m 30. Almost anything before the age of 7 and quite little between 7 and 14.
But AFAIK most people do remember quite some stuff from their childhood for the rest of their life. And forget some of course. I guess it varies.
I grew up using macos, still use it on my work laptop, and use elementary os on my home machine. For the most part, it’s great. I like
- The intuitive UX and the clean, consistent and beautiful UI
- Good default apps and settings
- Flatpak out of the box, no snap bullshit.
- Generally you can get away with quite a bit without resorting to the terminal
Unfortuntalely, there are a few big issues with it, mostly due to the small number of developers
- Updating the OS to a new major version (that they release every 1-2 years) is a hassle, there is no direct way to do distro-update like on ubuntu for example
- The mail and calendar apps don’t support Oauth, and by now, google doesn’t seem to support password+IMAP anymore. So no google calendar or mail integration. Also a hassle to set up anything that uses Oauth by default.
If those aren’t dealbreakers, I can recommend eos. But do check out the other options as well.
Clearly its not universal but rather a cultural phenomenon if they were fine but you feel humiliated

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•as a young person, what must one look for when it comes to finding a new country to live in?
0·2 months agoApart from the obvious ones of like, getting a visa and difficulty of getting a passport, in rough order of my completely non-scientific guesstimate
- Stability, safety
- Long-term track record of employment opportunities, and pay vs cost of living. You want to be able to find a job, and not starve.
- Price and quality of government services such as healthcare, education etc.
- Language situation. As an English speaker, you’d either want to go for English speaking, or somewhere where people speak alright English but let you practice their language so that you can eventually learn it. Also, see language difficulty for English speakers
- Culture and attitudes towards immigration; how difficult is it to socially integrate
- Matters of taste, would you like the culture, food, climate etc.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•The way of the pirateEnglish
0·2 months agoPaywalls only move this to the consumer:
If art doesn’t make you money, only rich people can make art.
Under the current system, you can make money making art, but only access it if you’re not poor (or pirate it lol).
Either way, much of art becomes an image of the experiences of rich people, either through the artists themselves or the audience.
A more fundamental change is needed if you really want to solve this issue.
Git repo that I sync with my raspberry pi. You never know if some of the dotfiles contain sensitive info so I like to keep them on machines that only I can access

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Can we have a healthy life only with fruits or fruits and plants combined alone, and if not why?
0·4 months agoSorry if this sounds rude, but based on your comments it seems that you’re just entering the early phase of the Dunning-Kruger curve on nutrition. Which means, you’ve started learning and are getting overly confident, despite not knowing that much in the grand scheme of things.
Don’t make big dietary changes because you just read something online. Don’t fall for fad diets. Don’t quit eating a large group of foods because they vaguely feel “unhealthy”. Learn about nutrition thoroughly, from reputable sources.
It’s good that you’re asking questions, though.
Never heard of this and cannot relate, maybe the better phrasing would be “why do I like the taste of ethanol so much”.

Good to know!
