News@lemmy.world•Social Security payments predicted to be cut in 2032
21·30 days agoWe’ll just end the program and people will no longer have to contribute! Honestly the number of fuckwits who would be excited about this is the sad part. Then they’ll cry the leopards are their face when they are being forced into amazon labor camps at 83. Stupid people can’t keep nice things. They never understood their value and didn’t have to sacrifice for them. So the lesson will have to be learned again.

News@lemmy.world•Border czar Tom Homan says "I don't like the masks" on ICE officers, but they "have to protect themselves"
83·1 month agoAnd why do they have to protect themselves? Is it because they are knowingly throwing the legal rights and process out the window and committing vigilante, racist, perverse genocidal philosophies out that are against the law?
If you have to wear a mask to hide from the public to “enforce laws”, you are always a bad actor. Not that they care.

News@lemmy.world•Obamas call fatal shooting by fed agent a 'wake-up call
51·2 months agoObama had the chance to appoint a SC justice and the right made a huge stink about him doing it in the last few months of his presidency after Trump was set to take over. Instead of doing it and understanding the significance, he/the Dems didn’t push and let Trump appoint Cavenough. Meanwhile Trump appointed all kinds of people to no resistance in the waning months of his first term. Curious that, almost like they want it both ways.

623·2 months agoMore moderated words to fight extremism. The obama presidency, ironically, was the fulcrum on which the country continued into extremism by Obama wasting 8 years of energy and time–including 2 years of supermajority in the senate–instead of responding to the increasing threat of the tea party and normalized extremist right wing positions and policy with matching progressive policy delivered. ACA was the only significant accomplishment and it was watered down and written by insurers, which meant it didn’t fix affordability so made it easy to demonize as failed.
We kept Guantanamo open, took years to get out of Afghanistan, didn’t roll back the fascist surveillance state put into effect by The Patriot Act, didn’t move against monopolies, didn’t raise the fucking minimum wage…
Obama’s moderation with the true chance to set a different course was what helps trump and extremists after that. His naivete is as much to blame as anything for current state.

News@lemmy.world•Calls mount on Trump administration to fully investigate Alex Pretti’s killing
1·2 months agoWhen you’ve either painted or allowed yourself to be painted yourself into a corner of powerlessness. Better to lean into letter writing, strongly-worded condemnations and “calls for” the thing you should have prevented in the first place, than actually doing something.

News@lemmy.world•Greenland PM responds to Donald Trump: "Our country"
0·3 months agoI think H. would have appreciated the spirit. Lots of his songs were edgy–given the time and genre he was writing for. Officer krupke in West side story, for example.
Game would have respected game. H. Probably would have had more trouble understanding how mon-u-fucking-mentally stupid a world driven by greed could have become. He would have been much less concerned with animated movie song lyrics.

News@lemmy.world•Greenland PM responds to Donald Trump: "Our country"
0·3 months agoJust post the video instead of explaining it; we’re apparently out of the “cultural reference that will generally land” after 25 years. Plus then these poor folk who haven’t seen it can appreciate the wonder. It was nominated for an academy award for cripes sake!
The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 72nd Academy Awards (1999). This created controversy because all nominated songs are traditionally performed during the Oscar broadcast, but the song contained the word fuck, which the FCC prohibits using in prime time broadcasts. At the awards ceremony, comedian Robin Williams performed the song with a chorus that gasped when the word was to be sung (Williams turned around at the crucial moment and did not actually sing it…
The whole “end of free speech” issue comes not so much from the government sensor really (that’s still firmly restricted by the first amendment) but from companies themselves banning any content or accounts that might get them sued.
Really? The early major moves (so stupidly transparent and to reinforce the concern and urgency) was to go after Facebook who agreed to appoint a government representative to their board. Which is unprecedented except in state-controlled entities. Threats have been made and lawsuits filed by Trump personally or his new attack dog the “DOJ” against most major media organizations including those who produce content and/or control distribution and algorithms. Many of the orgs have paid “fines” or tributes to the government in power to remain in favor and altered their content, presentation and/or coverage. This is naked violation of freedom of speech and press.
Back to the point: if enormous and otherwise powerful companies so easily fold–in a matter of months into an administration–there is no “independence” and government censor is hardly theoretical as you would present it, but already in place, and as such puts who defines “dangerous” in an unsustainably temptingly powerful position ripe for future abuse. This is existentially concerning no matter your political stripes as it’s the end of the political experiment that was the US.
What you say sounds good, and this isn’t rhetorical, but who gets to decide what constitutes “harmful” then? Isn’t that still the same problem that could be weaponized against free speech?

0·3 months agoNever been to a game, always wanted to go Had planned to go since the cup was announced. Decided by March or April it was not only going to be unsafe due to potential ICE raids, trump being highly visible involved potentially enticing an attack, to say nothing of the price…forget about it, wont go.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•The GrapheneOS developers are giving me concerns about the future of GrapheneOS
0·4 months agoUnlike say Google? Why is there an expectation that a group working completely against some of the most powerful actors on the planet, openly, against the grain of mainstream society often and having to bear that responsibility would be charming, at ease?
I cannot even begin to imagine the mental stress from constantly having to think ahead, in a global David and Goliath, in a maze designed to get you to give up. I probably have half the issues the GOS team does and I can’t claim it’s for doing anything on the scale of what they are.

0·4 months agoKnowing nothing of the situations details, when you’re a thorn in the side of the most powerful interests on the planet,it seems reasonable that a small group would face deliberate, concentrated pressure from business to legal and the state and any other mechanism. That’s generally what power does, assuming the little guy isn’t subsumed.
What is the evidence of foul play by GOS, or why would they not have a pretty extreme bias of support?

0·4 months agoSo what is the local election likely for the state? Was it close last time? Are there good potential progressives or at least a dem who could win? Does this potentially tip the Senate a bit?
