My read of it is, the main difference is how publicized the genocide is in progress this time around, which plays into a narrative that israel is some kind of anomaly - but in actuality, they’re following the same general playbook as earlier colonialism but with some modernization to the tactics. So, as you say, it’s despicable (to say the least) but it’s not unique at all. Their material interests as settlers point them straight toward dehumanization and genocide; they are in a place they don’t belong that wasn’t offered to them and are trying to make it theirs on a large scale, which means they have to manufacture a worldview that says it somehow is theirs and that they deserve to have it, even if by force (in this case, zionism). Doesn’t make it the least bit okay, but that’s the kind of system they’re immersed in.
