Anyone walking into a room where people are all nodding along to the same shallow, unnuanced statements, and throwing stones at anyone that points that out or tries to share their own contradictory to the group’s experience, even doing so in complete good faith, isn’t going to engage for long. And so that discussion is never going to turn nuanced since all the people interested in that have been ousted.

And it sucks, because there are real harms in AI that must be guarded from for which we need widespread support. But the hostility and closed minded discussions just causes people to tune out and contrarily be more open minded towards AI as a response to the closed mindedness.

I mean, your post says “Forcing windows down Xbox gamers throats”. So people that are already in the locked down Xbox ecosystem, not people that already know that and avoid Xbox. Xbox is just Windows but locked down. It’s both Microsoft.

I completely agree people should just go for a PC, but if someone was buying Xbox already, they aren’t in the mindset. So if they’re going to buy Xbox anyways, having a device that’s not locked down to some console OS means they can switch at any time and rid themselves of Xbox, since it’s your device. To me that’s definitely an improvement over the status quo, even if other better options were already available.

The contracts for the Steam Machine were already locked in before RAM and GPU shortage even started, which means they will (like other consoles) be able to provide a reserved amount of devices at a fixed and lower price. But likewise, this also means that for any console that did not have contracts locked in before shit went down, will suffer massively from this. Thus looking at current prices for hardware isn’t indicative of how much prices will rise. Steam Machine could be the most affordable gaming device of the next decade.

But Valve also isn’t stupid. PC has the unique position where it has one of the longest backlogs of backwards compatible games and applications. Which means you don’t need top of the line hardware. People are still gaming on 10 year old PCs, so the hardware for those will be much more affordable and still be able to play most games. Especially indie games with their insane price to performance to quality ratios. If top line gaming on PC becomes economically unviable, it will simply move down a notch.

Windows might be the most used PC platform but game developer are well aware attaching their success to Windows is not the right move. And that’s exactly the kind of freedom PC gives that consoles do not.

I think that’s a good way to put it. You can’t do much about someone else crashing into you (Unless your husband is Mr Incredible), but you can do a whole lot more when selling/buying something to/from a stranger to avoid that turning nasty.

Honestly, asset flips or pure ai slop are often not something you would consider a ‘real game’. They are closer to a scam than anything. And they certainly wouldn’t be published by a reputable publisher. I think that’s also what OP was referring to, a game that meets some minimal level of development and involvement.

There’s truth to that currently yeah. I think my points still stand as well though, and in the long run you will still be out worse even if the upfront cost is currently cheaper. It also just seems contrary to the free and open nature of Linux, but if you don’t already own something you can upgrade and are currently strapped for cash, fair enough. But that’s also not going to change if you sink 400-500 dollars into it and that’s your budget for the next 5 years.

Or just… don’t buy consoles at all. Buy a mini PC (which you can upgrade too) or wait for the Steam Cube? Which would both be cheaper in the long run. Because why still funnel money into a company that seems to be adamant that it owns that machine (and lets be honest, could try and use any kind of kill switch or safeguard to stop you from doing so) and will wield your money as a weapon against you.

Hate to say it, but you might be missing out on something you won’t ever be able to experience again afterwards. It’s like with episodic releases of TV shows, half the fun is sitting with friends discussing and overthinking what just happened while you wait for the next episode. Being there too long after community wide revelations, you can’t experience that head space of mystery and surprise again. Deltarune handles the episodic releases very well honestly, I’d understand if it was a series of bad partial releases.

I agree with you, but if you measure the width of the dress at the tip of her fingers, the left and right are about 99-100 pixels, while the middle one is 105 pixels wide. Her face in all three images is about 38-39 pixels wide (measured at the earlobe), so that rules out they stretched the entire image slightly. But 5 pixels is significant enough to kind of muddy the validity of the OP’s message since it no longer rules out all but the appearance of the dress. It sadly happens that sometimes effects are exaggerated, even when there is a real effect at play.

Mailroom aside, if a delivery guy is fine crossing a city with 20/30k people horizontally in traffic, I don’t really see why this is such a bad thing when you break it down.

I count 35 floors, so you can cut it down to ~850 people on each floor after an elevator ride, and a building like this will probably have at least 4 elevator areas sectioning the building almost equally.

So you’re down to about ~210 people after entering the right side of the building, that’s like a big street / small neighborhood (and how far you have to walk should scale closely to that). And with this much people in one area you can really easily batch deliveries. And a delivery place will probably settle quite closely to such a hub of people anyways.

Not completely true. It just needs to be data that is organic enough. Good AI generated material is fine for reinforcement since it is still material (some) humans would be fine seeing. So more like: it needs to be human approved.

There’s really no good way - if you act normal they train on you, and if you act badly they train on you as an example of what to avoid.

My recommendation: Make sure its really hard for them to guess which you are so you hopefully end up in the wrong pile. Use slang they have a hard time pinning down, talk about controversial topics, avoid posting to places easily scraped and build spaces free from bot access. Use anonimity to make you hard to index. Anything you post publicly can be scraped sadly, but you can make it near unusable for AI models.

While I love my full-sized keyboard, respectfully - who cares. The whole idea of a PC is the freedom to use whatever you want.

Keyboards, controllers, speech to text, a wii-mote, literal bananas/bread, eye/blink trackers, whatever suits you best. Insisting there’s a best device for everyone doesn’t change people’s minds and just leads to hostility when we should be glad more people are using the device that makes them happy. One day you might be one of them when your circumstances or preferences change.

The thing is, I’ve seen statements like this before. Except when I heard it, it was being used to justify ignoring women’s experiences and feelings in regard to things like sexual harassment and feeling unsafe, since that’s “just a feeling” as well. It wasn’t okay then, and it’s not okay the other way around. The truth is that feelings do matter, on both sides. Everyone should feel safe and welcome in their surroundings. And how much so that is, is reflected in how those people feel.

The outcome of men feeling being respected and women feeling safe are not mutually exclusive. The sad part is that someone who is reading this here is far more likely to be an ally than a foe, yet the people who need to hear the intended message the most will most likely never hear it nor be bothered by it. There’s a stick being wedged here that is only meant to divide, and oh my god is it working.

The original post about bears has completely lost all meaning and any semblance of discussion is lost because the metaphor is inflammatory by design - sometimes that’s a good thing, to highlight through absurdity. But metaphors are fragile - if it’s very likely to be misunderstood or offensive, the message is lost in emotion. Personally I think this metaphor is just highly ineffective at getting the message across, as it has driven people who would stand by the original message to the other side due to the many uncharitable interpretations it presents. And among the crowd of reasonable people are those who confirm those interpretations and muddy the water to make women seem like misandrists, and men like sexual assault deniers. This meme is simply terrible and perhaps we can move on to a better version of it that actually gets the message across well, instead of getting people at each other’s throat.
