Laura Loomer lamented that the new pope ‘is anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis,’ adding that it’s ‘GROSS’ that he now leads the Catholic Church

It didn’t take long for right-wing media figures and MAGA provocateurs to cry out in rage over the election of Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV after it was revealed that he’d publicly criticized JD Vance and expressed sympathy for immigrants and George Floyd.

Despite feeling national pride over the fact that the Chicago-born Prevost has become the first American pope in history, conservative pundits and Trump loyalists fumed over the “WOKE MARXIST POPE” and complained that he is “worse than Francis,” referencing the previous pontiff known for his progressive values.

Even before the “dark horse” American cardinal was elected the 267th pope, former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon warned about Prevost’s views, claiming that he would be a poor choice for the MAGA movement.

Maybe the church knows better than to have a concordat with the nazis this time.

    Maybe.

I love how they lost their shit about an American speaking Italian, in Italy, to a shit load of Italians.

The American nationalism has truly rotted their brains.

It’s bad enough half of his speech at the Conclave was in Spanish. You know from that he’s insufficiently AMERICAN. And his dual citizenship with Peru & USA makes him doubly suspect.

The Catholic Church may be corrupt and reactionary and have friendships with fascists in its past, but right now it’s less extreme and less fascist than MAGA.

The church has friendship with every nation that will have them. I believe that they are spineless cowards but I get that from their point of view this allows them to be able to help their people inside the country and continue to have influence and continuity after the fascist government fails.

The church has learned to put its own existence over everything else. An instinct that has clearly paid off, however spineless it may be.

Contradictory? Not at all. Radical just means opposed to the status quo, “leftist” is pretty broad but is generally used to mean “left of the DNC” by politically engaged people and “left of Ronald Reagan” by MAGA. Marxism is a specific foundational political philosophy that identifies and idealizes a communist society.

Just because the monkeys on typewriters don’t know the definitions doesn’t mean the words don’t go together.

Well that’s just wildly misunderstanding political definitions, can’t help you much there bud. (You probably think of all communism as Stalinist Authoritarian Tankie Communism with a paranoid autocrat but there’s a whole spectrum in the anarchy/libertarian direction that really puts the “community” in “communism”)

Most people don’t read the entire bible and churches try to avoid it by doing “bible study” where they cherry pick sections that sound good. They avoid the bits about god allowing owning slaves, god telling his people to kill everyone in the area but keep the virgin young girls as rape slaves, and all the other juicy bits in the bible.

It’s a horrible book and the god character is a monster.

It’s clearly divided into an older section and a newer section, and the basic definition of Christian is the newer section defining empathy, caring, accepting of all the people. Sure there’s still some effed up stuff but what do you want from a 1500 year old book: the basic message of the new part is love

It’s more accurate to say these people are not Christian even if the use the name. They do not follow the teachings they proclaim, and have more in common with the Pharisees, the oppressors

The question isn’t what do you want from an old book, it’s what do you want from a book people are choosing to follow.

            It isn’t though.

Jesus was a failed apocalyptic preacher who basically said don’t worry about your life right now because it will all end soon enough. He thought end times would be in his lifetime.

Yes, but the message of the new testament has very little to do with the historical figure of jesus and is build around the ideas of Jesus that devolved in the years after his death. For the later church I would agree: The main message is love.

That is a very protestant view of the afterlife. Some Christians share it, some don’t.

Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. …whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. Matthew 25:41–43 (NIV)

Be kind to others or burn forever. At least thats how I would read this.

It was a bit worse than selling stuff. The area they had set up was specifically for people to do community service and help the poor in the name of God.

Imagine predatory payday lenders showing up to a church charity event/potluck, not bringing food, acting like they were doing people favors with 50% interest loans, and expecting blessings.

So not much has changed really…

Whaaaaat? This isn’t what Jesus would have wanted!

Greed 4:19 “You get your own fish and loaves. I paid for this. I can throw it on the floor if I want. Suck it up libtards!”
