Nobody should care if he used to be a landscaper. It’s not relevant. His age is absolutely relevant though. He’s far too young to have the wisdom and experience to handle this job properly. How is he going to know which experts to bring in and who to listen to? He’s grossly unqualified.

Holy shit, Peter David wrote some of my favorite Star Trek novelizations. In 1997, I moved to a new area just before my junior year of high school. My new school was massive and I was an introvert who wasn’t great at making friends. But somehow I ended up hanging out with a few fellow Star Trek fans, who introduced me to his new series, Star Trek: New Frontier (thank you Regina!). It got me through the rest of high school!

The source material isn’t great. Interesting concept but painful execution at times. The three novels (Wool, Shift, and Dust) read like YA. I stubbornly read my way through them during pandemic but it was rough going and I ended up donating them to my library because I knew I’d never want to read them again.

I’ve watched the first two seasons of the show, and I think they’re doing a reasonably good job given how mediocre the novels are. Pacing and characters making dumb decisions are both problems, but they were problems in the books too.
